Curriculum Intent

At Godfrey Ermen Primary we recognise the importance of Physical Education to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the role it can play in a child’s spiritual, moral and cultural development.

We are committed to supporting the long- term health and wellbeing of our children and understand the impact physical activity and sport has on this. We aspire for all children to have experience of a wide range of sport and exercise so that they can find an activity that they enjoy and can pursue well beyond their primary years.

We aim to provide a broad and balanced P.E. curriculum to aid children’s increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. A balance of individual, team, co-operative and competitive activities aims to cater for individual pupil’s needs and abilities.

We strive to offer all children the opportunity to represent our school across a range of cluster and city wide events throughout their primary years.

Implementation

At Godfrey Ermen, each child receives two hours of PE per week which is carefully mapped across the school to ensure a broad range of skills and experiences. These sessions are delivered by class teachers or our highly skilled support staff.

Our PE curriculum is based on the principles of the REAL PE Programme, which ensures progressive learning objectives, which, combined with varied, and flexible teaching styles, endeavours to provide appropriate, stimulating, challenging and enjoyable learning for all pupils. Real PE, Dance and Gym are centred around six ‘cogs’ of learning:

Personal

Health and Fitness

Cognitive

Creative

Applying Physical

Social

Each one sets out to develop every child’s skill set through clearly structured steps to success and peer led coaching and mentoring. This is entirely focused around a 'personal best' model. This unique approach helps pupils to not only develop specific movement skills to the best of their own ability but also helps the children to become well rounded members of our school community by teaching them the skills to coach and mentoring others. The 'Real PE' element of our curriculum is accessed through the Jasmine platfrom which provides interactive and engaging lesson content to support the high quality delivery of PE sessions and all staff have had high quality training on both the philosophy of the approach and the tools for lesson to aid lesson delivery.

Following the acquisition of fundamental movement skills in Key Stage 1 we supplement this with units of work focused around specific sports and outdoor adventurous activities.

At the heart of the PE curriculum lie our PRIDE values which closely align with the Real PE 'Cogs' of learning. These are thoroughly integrated into our PE sessions as well as our wider curriculum offer:

Personal Excellence – hope and wisdom

Respect and friendship- love forgiveness and tolerance

Inspire and innovate- reverence and creation

Determination – endurance and faith

Equality – justice and compassion

In addition to the importance placed on PE lessons we also have a broader curriculum offer which includes the opportunities for pupils to take part in extra-curricular sports, activity clubs and competitions such as rounders, netball, bench-ball, archery, hockey and more.

Daily physical activity and health enhancing activities also play a crucial role in our offer to pupils including active lessons, active break and lunchtimes and extra-curricular activities.

Impact

Our curriculum improves both the physical and emotional wellbeing of children at Godfrey Ermen, We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through stimulating and engaging quality first teaching. Our Pride values are embedded within the subject to ensure that the children develop a positive attitude towards sport and physical exercise that lasts a lifetime.

Assessment

Assessment in PE is completed at the end of each unit. Children are assessed against progressive ‘essential learning’ outcomes. These are taken from the six ‘cogs of learning’ from Real PE, Dance and Gym and focus on both the performance of specialist fundamental movement skills and also the personal and social aspects of the unit which includes coaching, communication and appraisal.

This model allows us to assess more holistically a child’s performance in PE.
